Zeebrugge gives discounts to sustainable ships

From 2012 the Port of Zeebrugge is giving discounts to environmentally friendly ships that call at the coastal port.

Today, shipping companies can voluntarily provide information about their ships in the Environmental Ship Index (ESI). This index was first introduced by the World Port Climate Initiative in 2010. The new measure aims at persuading shipping companies worldwide to reduce emissions of harmful substances from their vessels. The index includes emissions of sulphur, nitrogen, particulate matter and greenhouse gases.

The port of Zeebrugge has  decided that ships that achieve a score of 20 or more on the ESI index can enjoy a 10% discount on the tonnage duty they have to pay in Zeebrugge.
