New owners for Duisburg?

There are strong, but unconfirmed, rumours that the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp are jointly seeking to purchase a stake in the important shortsea/inland port of Duisburg.

Duisburg is Europe’s largest inland port and ownership is currently shared by the city of Duisburg, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German government.

The German government has elected to sell its stake in the port and the Federal Ministry of Finance has been charged with overseeing the sale. Potential purchasers are yet to be confirmed and Rotterdam and Antwerp are remaining tight-lipped. However, it has been reported that Hans Smit, CEO of the port of Rotterdam, believes that an acquisition would improve container flow from Rotterdam into the European hinterland.
