Maersk launches Seago Line

Shipping giant Maersk has announced the launch of a new European shortsea company, Seago Line, that will service ports in the Baltic, Mediterranean and Russia. The full service is expected to become operational by 1 July 2011. With a focus on “creating value through increased flexibility and speed” it appears the new service was established to retain business that Maersk had previously been giving away to other shortsea operators.

The European shortsea feeder and container trades are highly competitive but it is thought Maersk has a reasonable chance of success due to the low start-up investment required for Seago. Vessels will either be in-charters or tonnage already owned and initial business will come from the parent company’s global liner trades.
