88th IMO Safety Committee advised of ECDIS concerns

The International Parcel Tanker Association (IPTA) reports that the 88th session of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee was advised of issues that had been identified within Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) which were affecting the operational performance of some ECDIS systems. The anomalies, mainly relating to display and alarm behaviour, had been discovered within a small number of systems, but concern was expressed that there may be other, as yet undiscovered anomalies.

It was acknowledged that given the complexity of such systems it was likely that such issues would continue to arise in the future and agreed that it would be beneficial to share information about such anomalies. A circular was therefore issued inviting member governments to encourage seafarers to report such anomalies in confidence in order that it might be shared with other IMO member governments and alerts issued where any anomaly might affect safety of navigation.
